resilience, service, & commitment to building stronger communities
leadership from the start
Leadership has been a consistent theme throughout Diaz's life. During high school, he was elected class president as a freshman, sophomore, and junior before serving as student body president his senior year. During his junior year, however, family conflict forced him to make the difficult decision to leave home. For nearly a year, he experienced homelessness, often living out of his car while continuing to attend school, work, and volunteer.
Rather than allowing adversity to define him, Diaz devoted himself even more deeply to serving others.
By the time he graduated high school, he had completed more than 7,000 hours of community service, earning an Honorable Mention in the Silver Knight Awards' Social Sciences category for his dedication to public safety, civic engagement, and youth leadership.
Diaz earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Florida and a Master of Public Administration from Florida International University. While attending UNF, he served as Student Body President and later as President of the Florida Association of Student Government Presidents, overseeing 12 departments, 153 staff members, and a $2.3 million budget. He also represented students before university leadership, the Florida Board of Regents, the Florida Legislature, and members of Florida's congressional delegation. During this time, he completed an executive internship in the office of U.S. Senator Bob Graham during the 105th Congress.
Raised in Homestead, Florida, as one of eleven children in a family facing significant financial hardship, Diaz learned early that perseverance, responsibility, determination, and service to others was essential in creating opportunities. Despite limited resources, high expectations at home instilled the values that continue to guide his leadership today.
His passion for public service began at the age of 13 when he joined the Homestead Police Explorers Program. Through leadership training, community service, and mentorship, he developed the discipline and sense of responsibility that would shape his future. Rising to the rank of Assistant Chief, Diaz discovered a lifelong calling to serve his community.
That commitment eventually led him to accomplish what is believed to be a first among sitting city managers, completing the police academy and becoming a certified law enforcement officer while serving as Town Manager. Today, he continues to volunteer as a police officer, patrolling the streets on his own time without compensation as a way of giving back to the community he so proudly serves. Serving alongside the officers he leads provides firsthand insight into the realities of policing while reinforcing the values that define both the badge and his leadership: trust, service, and accountability.
dedication
Before entering municipal management, Diaz served with Miami-Dade County's Water and Sewer Department as Assistant Director for Administrative and Legislative Affairs. There, he managed a budget exceeding $134 million, supervised 247 employees, and oversaw Human Resources, Support Services, Communications, Procurement, and Fleet Management. As State Legislative Coordinator, he helped secure more than $300 million in state funding to advance Miami-Dade County's capital and operational priorities.
In March 2007, at just 29 years old, Diaz achieved his goal of becoming the manager of a small municipality before the age of 30 when he was appointed as the Town Manager of the Town of Golden Beach. He is believed to be among the youngest city managers in Miami-Dade County history and continues to serve in that role today.
Over nearly two decades of leadership, Diaz has helped transform Golden Beach into one of South Florida's premier residential communities.
Early in his tenure, he established the Town's Resident Services Department, creating a concierge-style approach to municipal government that strengthens communication between residents and Town Hall while enhancing quality-of-life programming, community events, and customer service. He also created the Town's "Mr. Fix It" program, providing residents with a single point of contact for addressing maintenance concerns throughout the community, reinforcing his philosophy that local government should deliver exceptional, responsive service.
Under Diaz's leadership, Golden Beach has experienced extraordinary growth and investment. Assessed property values have increased from approximately $450 million to more than $2.3 billion. The Town maintained a stable combined millage rate of 8.4 mills for ten consecutive years while implementing more than $80 million in capital improvements. Building on that record of fiscal stewardship, the proposed combined millage rate for the upcoming fiscal year will be reduced from 8.4 to 7.99 mills which is the largest reduction in the Town's history and the first time the combined millage rate has fallen below 8 mills. This historic reduction is expected to provide approximately $900,000 in savings for residents while reflecting the Town's continued commitment to responsible financial management without compromising the exceptional services residents expect and deserve.
These investments include rebuilding critical water and stormwater infrastructure, expanding the Town's park system from two to nine parks, constructing two new bridges, delivering high-speed fiber connectivity to every residence, developing a state-of-the-art Civic Center Complex featuring a Category 5 hurricane-rated Landfall Team Bunker, and completing a new Wellness Center along with the Reimagined Tweddle Park. The revitalized park features three tennis courts and two pickleball courts, with additional enhancements underway that include two age-specific playgrounds, a padel court, a basketball court, and a dog park with dedicated areas for both large and small dogs respectively. Through strategic partnerships and advocacy, Diaz has also secured nearly $50 million in outside funding to help finance these transformational projects.
Equally important to Diaz is cultivating a strong sense of community. Golden Beach hosts year-round events celebrating Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Halloween, New Year's Eve, and other community traditions. Residents enjoy unique quality-of-life initiatives, from Valentine's Day doorstep deliveries to annual holiday gifts that celebrate civic pride and strengthen neighborhood connections. These programs reflect Diaz's belief that exceptional local government extends beyond infrastructure and creates meaningful experiences that foster belonging and community.
Throughout his career, Alexander Diaz has remained guided by a simple philosophy: service before self. As he continues to lead Golden Beach, his focus remains on investing in infrastructure, enhancing public safety, elevating resident services, and delivering an unparalleled quality of life. His legacy continues to be built one project, one innovation, and one act of service at a time.
